Boiler operators are assigned eight hour shifts at the Steam Plant. Technician operates (100 PSI) steam boilers, one 500 HP and one 1000 HP. Technician maintains constant pressure and flow of steam by adjusting valves, feed and circulating pumps, and controls. He maintains proper air/fuel ration by regulating fans and damper openings. He helps maintains proper feed water chemistry by adjusting chemical feed controls on multiple chemical feed station pumps to keep all water within required chemical ranges. He performs testing of boiler feed water and condensate to confirm they are within required ranges. All tests are then recorded in log books. Position maintains the plant log by recording specified temperatures and pressures, fuel consumption, water flows, and other similar data. Under direction of Plant Supervisor, operates steam and mechanical equipment to clean and repair boiler and related parts. Position responsible for maintaining fuel dispensing system and steam distribution system. Additional duties are to maintain watch on building automated control system computer, acknowledge alarms, and relay emergency information to Public Safety. Daily housekeeping as assigned within the steam plant. Issuing and recording gasoline to state-owned motor vehicles. Insure proper operation of (100 PSI) 500 HP and 1000 HP steam boilers. Insure boilers maintain constant pressure and flow of steam by adjusting valves, feed and circulating pumps, and controls. Insure proper air/fuel regulation by adjusting fans and damper openings. Maintain proper feed water chemistry through chemical pump regulation. Test boiler feed water and maintain log of results. Maintain log of temperatures, pressures, fuel consumption, water flows, and other similar data. Clean and repair boiler and related parts. Maintaining fuel dispensing system and steam distribution system. Perform administration of multiple complex activities involving all of the maintenance functions listed above by defining timelines, deadlines, and priorities to insure the overall outcome of steam production. Insures safe operation of equipment and employee safety. Position to use considerable knowledge in operation, construction, installation and maintenance procedures of Industrial boiler operations. Monitor critical building equipment and infrastructure. Contact and co-ordinate proper technicians required to respond to failures of lab equipment and/or vivarium conditions that could result in harm or damage to lab experiments and/or animal studies. Relay emergency information to Public Safety. Identifies and informs supervisor regarding any safety problems or hazards that may arise from operation of fuel dispensing equipment. Insure compliance with all regulatory standards related to fuel storage and dispensing equipment. Determine appropriate equipment and/or gear needed to insure response required for spill protection as it relates to the fuel tanks, fuel storage and dispensing.

Organizational Unit Overview:
The Facilities Maintenance Health Sciences Campus Department's primary purpose is to maintain and improve the physical plant of the Health Sciences and West Research Campuses of East Carolina University. This includes grounds maintenance; operation and maintenance of the steam plant and chiller plant; heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, including one 900-ton, one 1200 ton and five 1400 ton chiller units with associated equipment; one 500 horsepower and one 1000 horsepower boiler; electrical distribution system including emergency electrical power generating facilities; domestic hot and cold water systems; vacuum systems; two ultra-pure water systems; natural gas distribution system; and fire protection system, including fire pumps, sprinkler systems, fire hoses, and fire alarm systems. It also includes repairs over 750,000 square feet of enclosed building in 31 separate buildings varying in age from 2 to 50 years, including roofing, drywall, flooring, block and brick work, painting, casework repairs, and maintenance of approximately 2,000 doors including a comprehensive key control program. The Facilities Maintenance Department performs renovations and additions to the physical plant. This includes relocating and installing partitions, doors, casework, electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems, and design and implementation of landscaping.
