HonorBridge is expanding the Tissue Department and hiring for mid shifts and night shifts in our Durham, NC office. No on call, shifts are 12 or 10 hours, with an evening shift differential.

- Mid shift 1300-0100 / 1500-0100
- Night shift 1900-0700 / 2100-0700
Job Summary: The Surgical Tissue Specialist (STS) maximizes tissue recovery by applying specialized skills in an operating room setting for the surgical recovery of donated tissues; musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, skin, and associated tissues. The STS performs a medical assessment of donor information, physical assessment prior to donation and works with a team throughout the donation process. The STS is responsible for coordinating with hospitals, funeral homes, transporters, and other internal and external partners to ensure a timely donation process.

Role on Team: Recovery Specialist
Performs tissue recovery in an operating room setting in a manner that maximizes quality of recovered tissues.
Adheres to standard operating policies and protocols for surgical recovery
Demonstrates proper aseptic and surgical technique
Demonstrates skillful use of surgical instrumentation and equipment
Demonstrates compliance with OSHA and other safety standards and guidelines
Utilizes supplies and materials in an efficient and cost-effective manner
Performs operating room setup ensuring correct supplies are documented and utilized for the specific tissue recovery
Reports low par levels of stock and maintains an organized supply storage area in conjunction with other departments
Completes clinical maintenance and cleaning to the in-house clinical area.
Completes daily, weekly, monthly, and terminal cleaning of clinical space.
Performs pre and post cleaning of operating room
Role on Team: OR Lead
Collaborates with the recovery team in a manner that maximizes quality of recovered tissues
Works with a team to achieve a high level of efficiency and cooperation
Applies knowledge of medical criteria in evaluating potential donors
Aseptically packages recovered tissue and ships tissue according to policies and procedures
Performs the recovery of additional tissue types, aortic iliac and heart for valve tissue
Completes case documentation completely and accurately.
Performs follow-up according to established standards and policies
Adheres to standards for communications and documentation
Documents case related data accurately and in a timely manner
Submits accurate documentation and paperwork on time
Role on Team: Donation Coordinator
Coordinates the overall Tissue Donation process
Communicates effectively to hospitals, funeral homes, transporters, and other external and internal partners to ensure an efficient donation outcome
Coordinates with the Tissue Administrator on Call, Call Center, and the Recovery Teams to maximize tissues recovered in a timely manner
Packs supplies, ships tissues or assist in the operating room based on donor volume to maximize donation.
Complies with quality assurance policies and procedures
Collects documentation in donor record and organizes material according to policy
Utilizes EMR systems to upload donor’s medical record
Maintains electronic medical record (EMR) access to available hospitals
Utilizes medical information from remote EMR access to obtain and review available medical records
Maintains confidentiality of all patient and donor/recipient information
Additional Responsibilities:
Participate in monthly, quarterly staff meetings, continuing education opportunities and educational skills/wet labs as required.
Understanding and utilization of Microsoft software, donation software documentation, copier/fax machines and EMR systems
Assists with training and maintaining the skills of staff in a preceptor role.
Engaged in process improvement projects, PDSA’s, and other lean tools to improve the tissue donation process to maximize the recovery of quality tissues.
Performs other duties as assigned by Tissue Services Supervisor and/or Manager of Tissue Services
Physical Requirements:
lifts, positions, pushes and /or transfers donors and / or supplies < 20lbs: Greater than 65% of the time
lifts, positions, pushes and /or transfers donors and / or supplies < 50lbs: Less than 35% of the time
lifts, positions, pushes and /or transfers donors and / or supplies < 100lbs: Less than 35% of the time
Work Environment: Normal office environment (prolonged sitting), normal hospital environment, operating room environment (prolonged standing), some travel within service area.
Salary Range: $45,000 - $70,000 – based on relevant experience and skills
Education: Associates Degree with a concentration in healthcare or one year experience in a clinical environment preferred. Surgical tech background, and/or EMS experience preferred.
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: CTBS certified or becomes CTBS within 2 years of being signed off in training of all three roles that make up the Surgical Tissue Specialist at HonorBridge.
Skills and Qualifications: Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, demonstrated ability to work with surgical instrumentation, ability to function in high-pressure situations, knowledge of operating room environment, experience in form completion and documentation, commitment to organ and tissue donation. Valid state driver’s license required.
