Golf Course Assistant Superintendent
Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent performs supervisory and maintenance work necessary for the grounds keeping of all Sea Trail Golf Club golf courses. This work involves initiation, direction and performance of tasks relating to golf course grounds maintenance with other work-related duties as required.
The Golf Course Assistant Superintendent assists in managing the Head Mechanic, Crew Foremen, Irrigation Foreman, Chemical Application Technician and maintenance staff.
This position is a Salaried Exempt, full time position with days and hours of work as required. Will include weekends and holidays as required.
Reports To: Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent
Skills:
- Turf grass knowledge, specifically warm and cool season turf, Bent grass greens and Bermuda grass greens.
- Ability to quickly learn golf course irrigation layout (heads, valves, quick couplers) and experience with satellite controllers, etc. and perform repairs of same.
- Ability to inspect all equipment, tools, and materials for proper condition and use
- Ability to perform mathematic calculations especially fractions and calibration techniques.
- Possess good organizational skills, logic and scientific thinking to solve problems.
- Ability to plan a regular ongoing maintenance calendar
- Ability to effectively communicate with others – provide detailed written and verbal instructions and assignments.
- Ability to visually inspect golf course conditions daily, identify potential issues (infestations, fungus, water drought stress, etc.) and report findings daily.
- Ability to train, motivate, supervise and develop subordinates.
- Ability to assist with scheduling maintenance crew
- Ability to perform irrigation repairs and inspections
- Knowledge of occupational hazards involved with and around golf courses and knowledge of proper safety precautions necessary in equipment operation and chemicals
- Knowledge of proper safety procedures – and effective communication of same.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees
- Excellent written and oral communication with ability to maintain accurate records and reports
Duties:
- Performs ground maintenance duties for assigned golf course or courses
- Demonstrates good leadership skills with ability to give directions to crewmembers and ensure tasks are performed correctly and completed
- Ability to operate various equipment including mowers, hand tools, trucks tractors, aerators, fertilizers and pesticide application equipment
- Assists in employee selections, trainings, disciplining, and performance evaluation
- Enforces all safety and hazards standards and regulations by instructing crewmembers in the correct work methods and operation of equipment
- Assist in developing schedules and maintenance duties; inspects and evaluates work progress
- Performs ground maintenance duties to maintain golf greens/turf. Knowledge of insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and other pesticides and instructs and directs subordinates in their use
- Operates various equipment including mowers, hand tools, tractors, aerators, fertilizer and pesticide application equipment
Follows and ensures pesticide applications are in accordance with state and county ordinances - Daily ongoing maintenance checks of greens and irrigation equipment
- Enforce rules, regulations, and policies established by the Resort as they presently exist or as they may hereafter be modified or amended and develop a policy of reporting such violations by golfers, employees, members, and guests
- Supervises the work of other crewmembers engaged in golf course maintenance activities and tasks
- Assist with operating budget preparation and following same
- Any other duties as may be required by management
Requirements:
- Must have prior Golf Course Management experience
- Education, knowledge, and experience in turf management and chemical applications and use
- Must have knowledge of equipment used in the care and maintenance of golf courses and irrigation matters
- Must have the ability to assist or assume all the responsibilities of the Superintendent as required
- Must have valid NC Pesticide/Spray applications license or ability to obtain one within a short period of time
- Must have the ability to work in various climates and temperatures
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Must adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Must have a valid Driver’s License
- Perform heavy physical labor, May be required to work in an environment that includes such activities as bending, lifting, stooping, kneeling, climbing, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling and grasping for up to 5 hours without sitting. May need to lift up to 100lbs occasionally and up to 50lbs frequently.
