The Utilities section of Facilities and Campus Services operates the University energy infrastructure system on a 24 hour, 365 day per year basis. Production facilities include a combined heat and power facility which provides both the steam for heat and electricity for campus. All of the water for campus is provided by a university owned potable water filtration plant. Electricity from the local utility is fed through a university owned electric substation. Utilities is also responsible for all of the distribution and collection systems located on campus including steam, chilled water, electricity, potable water and waste water.

What You Will Do
The purpose of this position is to provide direct support to the Sr. CEP WTP Operator for all activities necessary to maintain the Central Energy Plant (CEP) water chemistry program as defined by the Operations Manager and Sr. Plant Engineer. This position is responsible for maintaining troubleshooting, and operating as necessary, the makeup water systems, cooling tower systems, steam, campus hot water, and chilled water distribution treatment systems, and feedwater/condensate treatment systems at CEP on a daily basis. Support Water Filter Plant (WFP) if necessary, as directed.
This job provides the opportunity to work in a team environment with staff who take great pride in producing steam, electricity and chilled water for Cornell University. From combined heat and power to hydroelectric generation, the Central Energy Plant does it all! This is rewarding work that supports the university's mission of teaching, research, and outreach.
Work scope includes inputting data and making adjustment using Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and computers, modulation of pumps and valves, obtaining samples, laboratory testing, documentation and communication to ensure appropriate quality and availability of treated water to the CEP 24 hours per day. Samples, tests and makes chemical adjustments to ensure proper water quality is maintained in both the heating and chilled water systems. Records operation, tracks issues, and prepares documentation to ensure consistent operation and communication across all shifts. Monitors associated fluid streams for contamination in the CEP, chilled water systems and on campus. Makes necessary changes, working with Boiler and Plant operators and other involved parties as necessary, to minimize damage if contamination occurs. Maintains and monitors all associated chemical feed and laboratory equipment including instrumentation and performs other maintenance in all of the CEP facilities. Duties include the repair, calibration, adjustment, lubrication, cleaning, rebuild and renewal of all equipment to ensure operational safety, reliability, and efficiency.

This is a union position within the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE). The starting pay rate is $29.47/hour.

Required Qualifications
High school diploma.
Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.
Ability to obtain and hold a Pesticide Applicator/Technician license.
Ability to obtain respirator certification.
Ability to operate a forklift/pallet jack.
Demonstrated ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems.
Experience using desktop computers and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI).
Ability to read gauges, measure volumes and record information on log sheets and in computer databases.
Demonstrated ability to give and receive feedback, communicate honestly, listen, respect others, learn from mistakes, set high goals and achieve them, overcome obstacles, uses time effectively, sets priorities, and participates effectively on teams.
Is highly motivated and exhibits innovation, good judgment and reliability in the work place.
Ability to work in an environment that includes high ambient temperature, noise, and dust. Ability to safely work with chemicals, high temperature/pressure steam, confined spaces, and other potential hazards. Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, and work with heights.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience operating or maintaining industrial water treatment systems--particularly surrounding boilers, industrial water softeners, reverse osmosis systems or cooling towers.
Experience with taking water samples and/or performing water tests.
Experience operating boilers and/or chillers and cooling towers.
Previous experience maintaining equipment such as pumps, valves, chillers, electrical equipment, and instrumentation.
Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of the skills necessary to perform minor maintenance activities. This includes use of such things as use of hand tools, wrenches, etc.
Strong communication ability and experience writing operating procedures and developing logsheets.
Additional education, e.g. Associates Degree in technical field or equivalent experience.
Certified Pesticide Applicator/Technician license.
