The Mechanic performs skilled work in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all Utility Operations systems and/or any University owned utility systems at the Danforth Campus and/or all remote University owned locations (excluding Quadrangle Management leased retail spaces and Quadrangle Housing managed properties). Conducts daily operational rounds, respond to any and all calls for service, be utilized to relieve the Plant Relief Engineer Maintenance Mechanic (PREMM), and/or any Mechanics, in an operational role for vacations, sickness, injury, or other absences regardless of shifts. Employee in this position will also be used to assist the Night Mechanic(s) in emergencies when working evening/night shifts.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Operates, maintains, repairs, removes, and installs any and all existing and future Campus heating, cooling, electrical, systems and related equipment and/or University owned utility systems at the Danforth Campus and/or all remote University owned locations.
Performs annual equipment teardowns, corrective and preventative maintenance, maintaining 4160V switchgears, maintenance of equipment rooms, and equipment cleaning in preparation for inspections and maintenance.Â
Perform other duties as assigned. Â
Working Conditions This position requires physical work including bending, sitting and standing for long periods of time, lifting up to 50 pounds, using heavy equipment and traveling to on- and off-campus locations. This position may be exposed to loud noises and chemicals.
Must be willing to provide one's own hand tools; be available for emergencies after normal work hours
Working Hours: Tuesdayâ“ Saturday, 6:30AM â“ 3PM.
A two year Degree or Certificate from a reputable Technical College in HVAC or Industrial Technology and ten plus years experience operating and maintaining chillers, boiler, pumps, cooling towers, water softeners, and utilizing Building Automation Systems to monitor and diagnose system issues.
A two year Degree or Certificate from a reputable Technical College in HVAC or Industrial Technology, to include industrial/commercial HVAC Systems or approved equivalent apprenticeship/training program.
A minimum of five years operation and maintenance of large, industrial, heating, cooling plants to include operating and maintaining chillers, boilers, pumps, cooling towers, water softeners, performing water treatment, welding proficiency, pipe fitting capabilities, and experience in troubleshooting electrical motors up to 500HP.
Experience in working with up to 4160V electrical systems and components, maintaining and troubleshooting VFD motor drives, ability to rebuild centrifugal pumps, experience with commercial boilers and chillers, and ability to learn large utility systems and troubleshoot, and perform emergency procedures as needed.
Ability to respond (without the need for supervision) to afterhours utility system emergencies (water main breaks, gas leaks, building electrical issues, campus street lighting issues, building flooding issues), including isolating shutoff valves, coordinating repairs, troubleshooting electrical systems/circuits, resetting tripped circuit breakers, setting up temporary gas powered pumps, etc.
Knowledge of and ability to use related tools and equipment, in a safe, journeyman, like manner.Â Proven experience with working safely and efficiently while maintaining and operating heating and cooling equipment and systems.
Ability to perform physically demanding, labor intensive work in hot, dirty environments, and must be able to pass through various manhole access openings of equipment.Â Applicant must be able to lift 50 pounds easily and consistently and be capable of extensive walking, climbing stairs and ladders, lifting, kneeling, and other similar physical activities.
Willingness and ability to work extended shifts while engaging in physically demanding work and to work in multi-craft positions/situations.Â Possess a high work ethic, ability and willingness to work in a team environment, and have a high degree of dependability.Â

High school diploma or equivalent high school certification, technical school training in maintenance related courses strongly preferred; 24 hour availability for emergencies and willingness to work overtime.
